14. The Book of Witr

14/1 Chapter:
What is said regarding the Witr.
باب: مَا جَاءَ فِي الْوِتْرِ

Mukhtasar Sahih Al-Bukhariعَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا : أَنَّ رَجُلًا سَأَلَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ (ﷺ) عَنْ صَلَاةِ اللَّيْلِ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ (ﷺ): (صَلَاةُ اللَّيْلِ مَثْنَى مَثْنَى، فَإِذَا خَشِيَ أَحَدُكُمُ الصُّبْحَ صَلَّى رَكْعَةً وَاحِدَةً، تُوتِرُ لَهُ مَا قَدْ صَلَّى).
Narrated Ibn 'Umar
Once a man asked Allâh's Messenger (ﷺ) about the night prayer. Allâh's Messenger (ﷺ) replied, "The night prayer is offered as two Rak'at followed by two Rak'at and (so on) and if anyone is afraid of the approaching dawn (Fajr prayer) he should pray one Rak'at and this will be a Witr for all the Rak'at which he has prayed before." Mukhtasar Sahih Al-Bukhariعَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا : أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ (ﷺ) كَانَ يُصَلِّي إِحْدَى عَشْرَةَ رَكْعَةً، كَانَتْ تِلْكَ صَلَاتَهُ - تَعْنِي بِاللَّيْلِ - فَيَسْجُدُ السَّجْدَةَ مِنْ ذلِكَ قَدْرَ ما يَقْرَأُ أَحَدُكُمْ خَمْسِينَ آيَةٌ، قَبْلَ أَنْ يَرْفَعَ رَأْسَهُ، وَيَرْكَعُ رَكْعَتَيْنِ قَبْلَ صَلَاةِ الْفَجْرِ، يَضْطَجِعُ عَلَى شِقَّهِ الْأَيْمَنِ، حَتَّى يَأْتِيَهُ المُؤَذِّنُ لِلصَّلاةِ .
Narrated Ãisha
Allâh's Messenger (ﷺ) used to pray " eleven Rak'at at night and that was his night prayer and each of his prostrations lasted for a period enough for one of you to recite fifty Verses before Allâh's Messenger (ﷺ) raised his head. He also used to pray two Rak'at (Sunna) before the (compulsory) Fajr prayer and then lie down on his right side till the Mu'adhdhin came to him for the (prayer). [2:108-0.B.]
14/2 Chapter:
The timing of the Witr.
باب: سَاعَاتِ الوتر

Mukhtasar Sahih Al-Bukhariوَعَنْهَا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ : كُلَّ اللَّيْلِ أَوْتَرَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ، وَانْتَهَى وِتْرُهُ إِلَى السَّحَرِ .
Narrated Aisha
Allâh's Messenger (ﷺ) offered Witr prayer at different nights at various hours extending (from the 'Isha' prayer) up to the last hour of the night. [2:110-O.B.]
14/3 Chapter:
One should make Witr as the last (prayer) (at night).
باب: لِيَجْعَل آخِرَ صَلَاتِهِ وتْراً

Mukhtasar Sahih Al-Bukhariعَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ : قَالَ النَّبِيُّ (ﷺ): (أَجْعَلُوا آخِرَ صَلَاتِكُمْ بِاللَّيْلِ وِثرًا) .
Narrated Abdullah bin 'Umar
The Prophet (ﷺ) said " Make Witr as your last Salât (prayer) at night. [2:112-O.B]
14/4 Chapter:
To pray the Witr on an animal.
باب: الْوِتْر عَلَى الدَّابَّةِ

Mukhtasar Sahih Al-Bukhariوَعَنْهُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ: رَسُولَ اللهِ (ﷺ) كَانَ يُوتِرُ عَلَى الْبَعِيرِ .
Narrated Ibn 'Umar
Allâh's Messenger (ﷺ) used to pray Witr on the back of the camel (while on a journey). [2:113-O.B.]
