72. The Book of Asking Permission (to Enter the Dwelling Place of Somebody Else)
مختصر صحيح البخاري
72/1 Chapter:
The small number (of persons) should greet the large number (of persons).
باب: تَسْلِيمِ القَليل عَلَى الكَثِيرِ

Mukhtasar Sahih Al-Bukhariعَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ (ﷺ) قالَ : (يُسَلِّمُ الصَّغِيرُ عَلَى الْكَبِيرِ وَالمَارُّ عَلَى الْقَاعِدِ، وَالْقَلِيلُ عَلَى الْكَثِيرِ).
Narrated Abu Huraira
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "The young should greet the old, the passerby should greet the sitting one, and the small group of persons should greet the large group of persons." [8:250-O.B]
72/2 Chapter:
The walking person should greet the sitting one.
باب: تَسْلِيمِ الْمَاشِي عَلَى الْقَاعِدِ

Mukhtasar Sahih Al-Bukhariوَعَنْهُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ، فِي رِوَايَةٍ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ (ﷺ) : يُسَلِّمُ الرَّاكِبُ عَلَى المَاشِي، وَالمَاشِي عَلَى الْقَاعِدِ، وَالْقَلِيلُ عَلَى الْكَثِير).
Narrated Abu Huraira
Allâh's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "The riding person should greet the walking one, and the walking one should greet the sitting one, and the small number of persons should greet the large number of persons." [8:252 (A)-O.B]
72/3 Chapter:
To greet those whom one knows and those whom one does not know.
باب: السَّلَامِ لِلْمَعْرِفَةِ وَغَيْرِ المَعْرِفَةِ

Mukhtasar Sahih Al-Bukhariعَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا : أَنَّ رَجُلًا سَأَلَ النَّبِيَّ (ﷺ) : أَيُّ الإِسْلامِ خَيْرٌ؟ قالَ: (تُطْعِمُ الطَّعَامَ، وَتَقْرَأُ السَّلاَمَ، عَلَى مَنْ عرَفْتَ، وَعَلَى مَنْ لَمْ تَعْرِفْ).
Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Amr
A man asked the Prophet (ﷺ) "What sort of deeds or traits of, Islâm are good? The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "To feed others, and to greet those whom you know and those whom you do not know. [8:253 (B)-O.B]
72/4 Chapter:
Asking permission (for entering) is enjoined because of looking (i.e., lest one should look at the occupants of the house who may be in a state in which they dislike to be seen by others).
باب: الاسْتِعْذَانُ مِنْ أَجْلِ البَصَرِ

Mukhtasar Sahih Al-Bukhariعَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قالَ: أَطْلَعَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ جُحْرٍ في حُجَرِ النَّبِيِّ (ﷺ) ، وَمَعَ النَّبِيِّ (ﷺ) مِدْرَى يَحُلُّ بِهِ رَأْسَهُ، فَقَالَ: (لَوْ أَعْلَمُ أَنَّكَ تَنْظُرُ، لَطَعَنْتُ بِهِ في عَيْنِكَ، إِنَّمَا جُعِلَ الاِسْتِثْذَانُ مِنْ أَجْلِ الْبَصَرِ ) .
Narrated Sahl bin Sa'd
A man peeped through a round hole into the dwelling place of the Prophet (ﷺ) while the Prophet (ﷺ) had a Midra (an iron comb) with which he was scratching his head, the Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Had I known you were looking (through the hole), I would have pierced your eye with it (i.e., the comb)." Verily ! The order of taking permission to enter has been enjoined because of that sight, (that one should not look unlawfully at the state of others). [8:258-O.B]
